It’s finally time for some playoff football in Kansas City
By Brandon Kiley
Are you ready, Chiefs fans?
This is what it’s all about. The regular season can, at times, feel like a bit of a slog. Having Patrick Mahomes is a blessing, but the reality is his presence changes the way Chiefs fans consume the regular season. It matters, sure. But the conversation after every game is less about what just happened and more about what it means for this team’s Super Bowl odds.
We have finally arrived at the point in the season when those lessons can be implemented. This is nothing new—we’ve seen it time and time again. Andy Reid’s offense will have new wrinkles. God only knows what Steve Spagnuolo has prepared for C.J. Stroud and the Texans’ offense. I can’t wait to find out. We’ve been waiting to unwrap this present since the team made quick work of the Steelers on Christmas Day.
The opponent is set. The Texans will travel to Kansas City for a Saturday matinee against the Chiefs. This will be just the third time the Chiefs have played a Saturday afternoon playoff game in the Mahomes era. The other two games were also against AFC South foes: in 2023, against the Jaguars and in 2019, against the Colts.
The matchup is tricky. The Texans were not a great team during the regular season – as we saw when the Chiefs beat them 27-19 in Houston in mid-December – but they have star-level players on both sides of the football. Stroud has emerged as a legitimate top-10 quarterback in the league. Joe Mixon gains more than what’s blocked for him. Nico Collins is an elite wide receiver with the potential to take it to the house on any play. Defensively, Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr. form one of the best edge rush duos in the league, and Derek Stingley Jr. was just named a first-team All-Pro cornerback.
