Chiefs headlines for Thursday, October 3
The latest
It leaves them riding a 10-game winning streak dating back to last season (including the playoffs), across which they have amassed a +61 point differential – marking the slimmest margin of victory in a 10-game winning run in NFL history. The Chiefs have now also won seven straight games by seven or fewer points, tied-longest of such a streak in history with the 2020 Chiefs and 1996 Jacksonville Jaguars.
For all the Patriots-esque inevitability they have mustered as close-game assassins, a storm is on the horizon. If they are to clinch a landmark third in a row, it will go down as their most impressive yet. (Yes, we also said that last year!).
“On the offensive side of the ball, we’ve gotta get rolling,” he began after hailing the Chiefs’ formidable defense.
“And it’s not gonna get any easier after seeing Rashee going down during the game.
“I just love the way that guy was playing the game of football, how he was attacking every single day in practice.
“Sometimes you just root so hard for the guys who do it the right way and Rashee had been doing that, man.
“That was a huge dagger to me when I saw him go down.”
Taylor Swift’s presence at NFL games is positive for the league, players say in poll | The Athletic
The vast majority of players included in The Athletic’s 2024 anonymous NFL player poll — 72.5 percent to be exact — said they viewed the pop star’s interest in the game (and the coverage that stemmed from it) as positive for the league. Only 4.9 percent of players polled viewed it as a negative, and 22.5 percent viewed it as neither negative nor positive.
The Swift-NFL partnership was one of the many subjects The Athletic’s beat writers surveyed players about to include in this year’s poll, with 102 votes cast on the topic. Players were granted anonymity to speak freely about matters impacting the league.
6 – Patrick Mahomes
Kansas City Chiefs QB
For the second straight year, the three-time champ has been pretty careless trying to create as a downfield thrower, already up to five picks in four games. In a lineup losing one key weapon after another, however, he’s remained reliable in crunch time, hence the Chiefs’ 4-0 standing. (-4)
2024 NFL Week 5 QB Power Rankings: C.J. Stroud Enters Top 5 | The 33rd Team
1. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
Last Week: 1
Once a week, we get a weird Patrick Mahomes interception. This last one was more consequential because it led to the hit that injured Rashee Rice. That could potentially derail other offenses, but Mahomes has still found a way to navigate some of those mistakes. His ability allows the Chiefs to work things out on the fly.
Mahomes has not played particularly well in the first four weeks of the season, but he’s still the best quarterback in the league. Both things can be true.

Kansas City Chiefs: 13-4
Their season thus far is reminding me of Philadelphia’s start last year. They’re finding ways to win, but it isn’t sustainable considering the state of the roster. They’re very lucky to be 4-0.

32. Kansas City Chiefs – Tyler Booker, G, Alabama
There’s only so much money that a legitimate contender can spend on its interior offensive line, and the Chiefs already decided to make Creed Humphrey the NFL’s highest-paid center this offseason. That decision could be a harbinger for the eventual exit of Trey Smith, who seems destined to fetch a more lucrative offer elsewhere in free agency, and possibly Joe Thuney, who has one year left in his contract after this season. Booker could step in and take over Smith’s mantle as the line’s mauler.
32. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: T JOSH SIMMONS, OHIO STATE
It seems likely the Chiefs could be exploring offensive tackle options again this offseason, even after drafting Kingsley Suamataia. While they’re not giving up on him by any means, the blocking needs to improve from what we’ve seen through the first four weeks. I’m high on Simmons, whose movement skills are very fluid for a big man. He has put up an 86.4 pass-blocking grade.

Sources – Cowboys’ Brandin Cooks out at least 1 game after infection | ESPN
The Dallas Cowboys will be without wide receiver Brandin Cooks for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers — and potentially longer — after an infection developed in his right knee following a procedure last week, sources told ESPN on Wednesday.
Cooks had a procedure in New York following last week’s win against the Giants, sources said. After he developed symptoms upon his return to Dallas, Cooks had surgery to clean out the infection in his knee. That was performed by team doctors over the weekend.
Coach Mike McCarthy confirmed Cooks wouldn’t play against the Steelers on Sunday.
Where could Davante Adams end up? | NBC Sports
5. Chiefs.
They’re the most obvious destination. The question is whether the Raiders would trade Adams to a bitter division rival that is trying to make history with a third straight Super Bowl win.
If Adams were to become the No. 1 option in Kansas City and if the Chiefs were to win their third title in a row, Raiders fans might view that as an unforgivable move.

Chiefs-Chargers: How did running back Kareem Hunt look in Week 4’s win?
Burst
After he looked noticeably slower with the Cleveland Browns in 2023, there were legitimate questions about the 29-year-old’s speed and athletic ability. But right away, Hunt showed that he can still provide a solid burst out of the backfield — and create plays.
The Chiefs did their best to create favorable situations for him. Even though they tended to give Hunt the ball when lots of yards were needed, they made sure the tackle box was light on defenders; he would have room to rumble.
Light box here from LAC on 1st and 15. KC goes with the offset zone look to Hunt. 65 creates movement off the snap, and Hunt charges into the hole. Good job to break one arm tackle, and spin off another. Falls forward for some extra yards. pic.twitter.com/IKTZ6LbBiO
