Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has enjoyed his unit’s success, slowing down opponents over the past two games. He singled out praise to rookie defensive back Jaden Hicks’ contributions In recent weeks.
“I think his growth process and curve has been really what we expected and really what we hoped for. i think he has just gotten better and better and better. I think he gets more confident every week. You know what i really like about him?” said Spagnuolo. “When we go through these walk-throughs, and we’re sitting there, and it’s more mental, he is into every snap, whether it’s a walk through its regular practice rep.”
Hicks secured his second consecutive week with an interception during Saturday’s victory over the Houston Texans. He has made the most of his time in the lineup, taking advantage of opportunities to grab takeaways when he is used as an additional defensive back.
“He’s anticipating things pre-snap. He’s doing all those things that you want your safe needs to do from a mental standpoint; that’s encouraging,” said Spagnuolo. “He’s gone out there and made a couple of plays on the ball, so that’s helpful.”
The regular season is winding down, and Hicks, as a rookie, is stepping his game up in preparation for his first postseason experience. He will be relied on more as he continues to make plays in the secondary weekly.
