It’s been 12 weeks since Taylor Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Department debuted as the No. 1 album on the Billboard Top 200.
The project set records for longevity with that ranking, but it took another music icon – Eminem – to knock Swift off the perch and keep her from making history.
Forbes noted this week that with just one more week at the top, Swift’s album would have tied Stevie Wonder’s 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life for the most weeks at No. 1 from an album’s debut.
But Eminem’s The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) just debuted at No. 1 this week, ending Swift’s run at the top with Tortured Poets.
“The Death of Slim Shady debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 281,000 equivalent units shifted. That sum is largely made up of streaming units, as the tracks featured on the project racked up an incredible 220 million plays on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music in the first tracking week the full-length was available. It also sold 114,000 copies, despite only being available to purchase digitally,” Forbes reported.
Tortured Poets might climb back to No. 1 in little time at all. But for now, Swift’s efforts of topping Wonder’s iconic album will have to wait until the next one.
