Even though the Kansas City Chiefs are scheduled to play in Kansas City for the foreseeable future, there’s a chance they could move out of the city down the line.
Chiefs attorney Korb Maxwell recently said at a hearing that there’s an opportunity for the state of Kansas to step up as an option for the team.
“Missouri spoke. Jackson County spoke. They had their opportunity. But now, there’s a moment for Kansas to step up and an option for us all here,” Maxwell said, (first transcribed by ProFootballTalk).
The Chiefs announced at the end of February that they had planned to renovate Arrowhead Stadium before almost 60% of the voters rejected the proposal.
The team was going to contribute $300 million to the Arrowhead renovations, which had a total cost of $800 million.
Had the proposal been accepted by more voters, it would’ve taken place after the 2026 World Cup. The team’s current lease at Arrowhead expires after the 2030 season.
They have to keep every option on the table since their long-term future in Kansas City is a bit uncertain right now.
The Chiefs are a little over four months removed from winning their second-straight Super Bowl. They’ll go for a third in a row when the 2024 season starts in September.
