Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly took a big step towards taking the Chiefs from Kansas City, Missouri on Friday.
She signed legislation on Friday, allowing the state of Kansas to try and lure the Chiefs to Kansas as they face some uncertainty regarding their long-term future in Kansas City.
This legislation would help to pay for a new stadium after almost 60% of the voters rejected the proposal.to renovate Arrowhead Stadium following the 2026 World Cup.
The legislation will take effect on July 1 and will allow bonds to cover nearly 75% of the cost for a new stadium, per ESPN.
Kansas is trying to do the same thing for the Royals, Kansas City’s baseball team. They play right next to the Chiefs and also face some uncertainty about their long-term future in Kansas City.
Even Chief Attorney Korb Maxwell recently said at a hearing that there’s an opportunity for the state of Kansas to step up and it seems like that might be happening.
“Missouri spoke. Jackson County spoke. They had their opportunity. But now, there’s a moment for Kansas to step up and an option for us all here,” Maxwell said, (first transcribed by ProFootballTalk).
The Chiefs are a little over four months removed from winning their second-straight Super Bowl.
