Travis Kelce could have more help within the Kansas City Chiefs offense this season.
Kansas City’s wide receivers struggled before winning another Super Bowl behind a superb postseason from Kelce. General manager Brett Veach still addressed the position this offseason, signing veteran Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and drafting Xavier Worthy with the No. 28 pick.
At a press conference last month, Kelce complimented his new teammates based on what he saw from Brown and Worthy early in OTAs.
“It’s unbelievable that Veach finds ways to bring in – not only guys that have talent, that have unbelievable skill sets, but are good people,” Kelce said (h/t On3). “Just being able to get to know them over this offseason, it’s just been cool that Hollywood and X are just down-to-earth, humble guys. And they love coming to work, and they love football.
“When you bring that kind of mentality into a building that has that culture already set, the sky is the limit for those guys. I’m excited that they’re here.”
Brown, who exceeded 1,000 receiving yards with the Baltimore Ravens in 2021, will again team with an MVP quarterback following two quieter seasons on the Arizona Cardinals. Having set an NFL Combine record by running the 40-yard dash in 4.21 seconds, Worthy delivers more blazing speed to Kansas City’s offense.
Head coach Andy Reid looks forward to Brown and Worthy revitalizing the team’s vertical attack with more deep passing plays.
“Both of those two can run well and I think both love to play the game and are good football players, so I think that that’ll help us,” Reid said two weeks ago, per ESPN’s Adam Teicher. “It doesn’t hurt to have [downfield] speed. We’ve functioned without the great speed down the field and done well, but if you have an opportunity to get somebody that you think is a good player, just not a speed guy, but a good football player, I think you probably need to take advantage of that.”
Brown and Worthy could receive considerable attention from Patrick Mahomes early in their Kansas City tenure. Rashee Rice, the team’s top wide receiver last season, is expected to face a suspension for his role in a high-speed, multi-car wreck earlier this offseason.
