One of the biggest stars in the mid-majors over the last three years has been Oral Roberts’ star guard Max Abmas. But after entering the transfer portal following the season, two Power Five schools have emerged as early favorites for his services.
According to Jamie Shaw of On3 Sports, Texas and Kansas State “continue to come up” as potential suitors for Abmas. Both schools are coming off superb years where they both had their deepest NCAA Tournament runs in a generation.
Abmas is the NCAA’s active total points leader and led all of college basketball in points per game in the 2020-21 season. He’s averaged nearly 21 points per game over his career and averaged 23 points per game over the last three.
This past year Abmas had at least 25 points in 14 games. He had at least 30 points in five games en route to Honorable Mention All-American honors for the third straight year.
Texas and Kansas State “continue to come up” with highly coveted portal PG Max Abmas, per @JamieShaw5.

As for the two potential targets, both appear to be ascending powers in Big 12 basketball.Â
Texas managed to overcome the midseason dismissal of Chris Beard to not only win the Big 12 Tournament, but reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 2008 under interim head coach Rodney Terry. After the season, Terry was hired as Texas’ full-time coach.
Kansas State may have been the bigger story of the tournament though. After an early exit in the Big 12 Tournament, the Wildcats stunned blue bloods Kentucky and Michigan State to reach the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.Â
Either school would be an ideal destination for a player looking to make one last NCAA Tournament run in 2024.
