The Wildcats are out west in Provo to face off against a tough Cougars squad.
After a tough non-conference slate, your Kansas State Wildcats enter Big 12 play at 3-0 and ranked #13 in the country. The higher the ranking, the bigger the target gets, but it’s not something the Wildcats are unfamiliar with.
The Wildcats put their undefeated record on the line tonight against a solid BYU team that also sits at 3-0 headed into Big 12 play. The Cougars are undefeated after beating FCS Southern Illinois in Provo, then picking up consecutive road wins over SMU and Wyoming. BYU’s 18-15 win over SMU is their best on the schedule, and the Cougars have not yet in 2024 faced an opponent of K-State’s caliber. BYU does have a solid home advantage, and the home crowd is consistently rated as a very rowdy bunch.
There’s not much history to go on with this one, either. The two teams have split the all-time series at 4-4, with neither team winning a true road game in a series that dates to 1957. LaVell Edwards, the man for whom the stadium in Provo is named, coached the Cougars in the last four games has won three of those four: in 1972 against Vince Gibson, in 1977 against Ellis Rainsberger, and not quite twenty years later in a game that shall not be mentioned.
The Cougars have won the last two in the series. The Wildcats should have a great opportunity to break that streak and take back the lead. They have appeared improved in each game, and have learned from mistakes of the previous games. However, BYU will be their toughest opponent yet, and the late game definitely favors the home team.
Hopefully the Wildcats are fully awake and energized for this late one. Time to get revenge for the Cotton Bowl.
