Cats break the school record for points in a game
Two years ago, Kansas State dropped 116 on the Texas Longhorns, which eclipsed the program’s single-game scoring record.
Today, they did it again, posting a 120-78 win over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan. Taj Manning sank a three with 1:57 to play to put the Cats up 117-71 and surpass the previous record.
The Wildcats (6-2) were a ridiculous 21-40 from beyond the arc, accounting for more than half of the team’s points. Ten of the eleven players who saw action scored, with only Spencer Bain (who only saw one minute of action) being left out of the parade.
What would be the eventual game-winner was scored by David N’Guessan, who dropped in a layup with 16:46 to play. Achor Achor led the way with 21 points, while Dug McDaniel pitched in a double-double on 18 points and 10 assists along with five steals. N’Guessan (17), David Castillo (17), Brendan Hausen (14), and Max Jones (12) also hit double figures. Coleman Hawkins was 1-5, 0-3 from three, and 0-2 from the stripe in 26 minutes, finishing with two points although he did contribute four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Seven Wildcats — the six in double figures plus Manning — shot over 50% from the field, and all seven were at least 50% from three.
UAPB (1-8) is, of course, a bad team, which takes a bit of the shine off the record — especially since the previous record was set during a raucous game against Texas. But a record is a record, and so it goes.
Next up: Saturday night in New York City as the Cats take on St. John’s at Carnasecca Arena — sadly, a week after the legendary namesake coach’s passing at the age of 99. The game will air at 10:30am CT on FOX.
