For the second straight season, Kansas head coach Bill Self is heading into the season with an unfortunate injury.
Self was reportedly dealing with a “cracked tibia” before the 2022-23 season kicked off. Well, he’s going through another painful injury before the 2023-24 season gets underway.
According to a recent conversation with ESPN, Self said he suffered two broken ribs. How did the head coach injure himself?
Playing with his grandkids, of course.
Bill Self suffered two broken ribs while playing with his grandkids a few weeks ago, he tells ESPN. Said it’s excruciating pain and can’t imagine how any athlete plays a game with a broken rib. Said one of his grandkids cut in front of him and he fell.

“Bill Self suffered two broken ribs while playing with his grandkids a few weeks ago, he tells ESPN,” ESPN’s Byron Medcalf said. “Said it’s excruciating pain and can’t imagine how any athlete plays a game with a broken rib. Said one of his grandkids cut in front of him and he fell.”
Fans immediately joked about Self throwing his grandkids under the bus.
“Blaming the grandkids. Typical villain behavior,” one fan said.
“So was it a block on the grandchild or a charge on Grandpa Bill?” joked another.
Ohio head coach Jeff Boals shared his story of going through a similar injury. “2 years ago I broke 5 ribs and displaced 2 of them 3 days before our exhibition game in a weight room accident. Absolutely miserable for 2 months,” he said.
Hopefully Self can get healthy in time for the holidays.
