It sounds like the Kansas Jayhawks will be down one of their most exciting returning players next season.
In a press release sent out by the school on Wednesday, head coach Bill Self announced that sophomore guard Elmarko Jackson suffered a serious knee injury that’s expected to keep him out for at least a year.
“Yesterday, while working out in front of the campers, Elmarko Jackson tore his Patellar tendon,” Self shared. “It will require surgery within the next several days and a full recovery is anticipated. Elmarko will be able to assume non-contact basketball duties in the next several months, but the full rehab process will take approximately 12 months.”
“We are all crushed by this,” the coach continued. “Elmarko had a terrific spring. He has worked so hard and improved so much. This will be a challenge that he will meet head on and he will return as good as ever.”
Jackson’s injury reportedly brought an abrupt end to KU’s scrimmage after going down to the ground hard on his way to the rim.
It’s an unfortunate situation for everyone involved but hopefully the Marlton, NJ native is able to come back and make an impact on the Jayhawks roster in the near future.
Last season, the former four-star recruit averaged 4.3 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game in 18.7 minutes of action.
