New Louisville men’s basketball head coach Pat Kelsey seems to have the right personality for rebuilding the Cardinal program.
During his introductory press conference Thursday, Kelsey looked comfortable, cracking some jokes and even telling a funny story about a dream he claims to have had.
The dream starts, Kelsey explained, with him meeting St. Peter at the gates of heaven. As their tour begins, he passes the houses of fellow coaches Bill Self, Scott Drew and Dusty May before arriving at one belonging to Kentucky head coach John Calipari.
“So, we walk down further and further and further and we come to this big deal,” Kelsey said. “I’m talking impressive. Big, big crib, manicured, Bentley. It’s blue. It’s got a big ‘K’ on it. He says that’s where Coach Cal lives.”
From there, Kelsey said the two men walked on until they came to the most impressive house of all, a red one with a “big” Cardinal on it.
“I’m like, ‘St. Peter, that’s me? Denny Crum? Rick Pitino?’ He said, ‘Son, that’s where God lives,'” Kelsey said as the room burst out in laughter.
Kelsey spent the last three seasons at the College of Charleston, where he led the Cougars to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. He’s now entrusted with repairing a Louisville outfit that crumbled under Chris Mack and Kenny Payne.
At the very least, he won his first press conference today.
