Kansas hoops fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Florida guard Riley Kugel ever since he first announced his commitment. But now the whole situation with Kugel coming to Allen Fieldhouse is murky – at best.
In an interview with Andy Katz, Kansas head coach Bill Self addressed the team’s use of the transfer portal. But he then addressed the status of Kugel and admitted that it’s “up in the air” whether the Florida starlet will actually wind up joining the team.
“We also got a commitment from a young man from Florida, Kugel, Riley Kugel, that it’s up in the air whether or not Riley will come, but certainly those other three we feel really good about,” Self said, via KUSports.com.
Kugel is one of the most highly sought after players in the transfer portal right now. He has no shortage of experience, playing 65 games in just two years with the Gators and averaging 9.5 points per game mostly off the bench.
In two years at Florida, Kugel averaged 9.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 23.1 minutes per game.
But it’s starting to sound as though Self just wasn’t able to seal the deal after Kugel initially announced his commitment to the Jayhawks.
This past year the Jayhawks made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, finishing 19th in the nation.
Will Kansas wind up regretting not bringing Kugel into the fold?
