Love the glove!
Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and pitcher Seth Lugo each won their first career Gold Glove as winners were announced Sunday night.
Witt beat out Brayan Rocchio of the Guardians and Anthony Volpe of the Yankees to take home his first Gold Glove Award. He led all American League shortstops in Defensive Runs Above Average and Outs Above Average. The third-year player started 160 games at short, more than anyone in baseball and was involved in 73 double plays, third-most among shortstops.
Lugo is just the second Royals pitcher to win the award, joining Bret Saberhagen in 1989. He beat out teammate Cole Ragans, and Griffin Canning, who spent this year with the Angels. Lugo is among the nine AL pitchers to field at least 26 chances without an error, and he led all AL pitchers with 29 assists.
Catcher Freddy Fermin was also a finalist, but was overlooked for Seattle’s Cal Raleigh. You can see a complete list of winners here.
According to Ian Kraft with the Royals, the team now has 22 Gold Gloves over the last 14 seasons since 2011, the most in the Majors during that time.
