The lefty bat can draw walks.
The Royals announced they have signed infielder Cavan Biggio to a minor league deal. The 29-year-old left-handed hitter has a line of .225/.341/.379 over parts of seven big league seasons with the Blue Jays, Dodgers, and Braves. Biggio has a career 13.5 percent walk rate and is able to play all over the field.
The son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, Cavan was a fifth-round pick by the Blue Jays in 2016. He came up in 2019 and hit .234/.364/.429 with 16 home runs and 14 steals in 100 games, good for 3 WAR, earning him some Rookie of the Year votes. But he has struggled to hit over the last four seasons, and was traded to the Dodgers last summer. He only spent 30 games with the Dodgers before they released him in August, and after a brief stint in the minors with the Giants, he played four games with the Braves. Overall he hit .197/.314/.303 with five home runs in 78 games in 2024.
Biggio has primarily played second base in his career, but has spent significant time at third and in right field, and has played every position except pitcher and catcher. He does not historically have much of a platoon split, so he should be playable against lefties if needed. His bat has fallen off considerably, but he still brings a lot of plate discipline.
The Royals indicated they were looking for a bench bat that can hit from the left side and can play infield, and Biggio seems to fit that bill. He seems likely to compete for the role Adam Frazier filled last year.
